From the release of the first game in 2007, the series has grown into a multi-million dollar property with several ties like the 2016 film, comics, short films, and board games.
Despite its immense popularity, there are a few historical details, Easter Eggs, and behind-the-scenes facts that only die-hard fans would know about. Since the games draw their inspiration from a rich global history of politics and warfare, there is plenty of room for fans to interpret.
The basic premise is inspired by a Slovenian novel
Assassin’s Creed focuses on a cult of assassins who worked against the Templars for centuries. In most Assassin’s Creed games, allusions to real-life Hashshashin (Order of Assassins) were made. While there are many sources of medieval history to draw from, the historical fictional novel Alamut also looks at the history of this sect of assassins who murdered those they considered “enemies of the state”.
Alamut is a 1938 work by Slovenian author Vladimir Bartol which deals with the life of Hassan-i-Sabah, the founder of the Order. While the game may not be a straightforward adaptation, the novel shares some similarities in terms of the storyline and characters. For example, in the novel, one of the targets of the Assassins is Conrad de Montferrat. Conrad’s father William V also appears as the Templar in the first game.
Assassin’s Creed symphonic tour started in 2019
To celebrate the franchise’s music, a 2019 tour was launched with orchestral performances in Los Angeles, Montreal, Berlin, Milan, London, Zurich and San Francisco. The show featured performances by a symphony orchestra and choir, against an interactive 3D holographic background.
A treat for families from Assassin’s Creed Video game soundtracks, the Assassin’s Creed Symphony was slated to return in 2020. However, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, all dates have been canceled.
Characters like Altair and Ezio appear in other games
Due to their extreme popularity among gamers, characters like Altair and Ezio have also appeared in several unrelated games. For example, Altair is a playable character in Nintendo’s Wii Champions Academy: Football. Altair’s outfit is also an unlockable feature in Solid metal gear 4: Patriots’ firearms.
As for Ezio, the Assassin is a playable fighter in Soulcalibur V and his costume also finds its place as one of Sackboy’s outfits in Little big planet.
Far Cry is filled with Assassin’s Creed references
The Leap of Faith sequence in the Assassin’s Creed games is so popular that other Ubisoft properties sometimes refer to it. A major example can be seen in the Far cry games with Far Cry: Primordial involving an unlockable feat called Kanda of Faith. It basically involves players jumping off a cliff into a well, much like Assassins jumping into the haystack.
In the same game, the sound of the eagle from the Leap of Faith can be heard as two characters learn to fly with homemade wings.
Kristen Bell appeared in three of the games
The games feature an interesting voice cast, including recognizable video game actors such as Nolan North (who plays Desmond Miles) and Fred Tatasciore (who plays Maurio Auditore). Besides these names, a big movie star also appears by the name of Lucy Stillman in three installments of the franchise.
Kristen Bell provided both her voice and her likeness to the character of Assassin’s Creed, reprising the role in Assassin’s Creed II and fraternity. The actress would go on to become more famous in dubbing with the Frozen films in which she plays Princess Anna.
The first game was supposed to be a sequel to Prince Of Persia
Before Assassin’s Creed entered the picture, Prince of Persia was the most popular title for Ubisoft. In fact, the creative director behind the first two Assassin’s Creed games, Patrice Désilets, rose to fame as the director of the classic game Prince of Persia: Sands of time.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Désilets noted that his brain was wired to make another Prince of Persia game while he was working on Assassin’s Creed. He also mentioned that his inspiration for the Animus came from Prince of Persia games, “Some things you keep and some things you redo, and the Animus was just the device that replaced the Prince talking to Farah.”
Riz Ahmed has an Assassin’s Creed connection
Oscar nominated actor Riz Ahmed has appeared in several movies and TV shows in recent times. But what many may not know is that he is also involved in the Assassin’s Creed franchise through a voice role in Assassin’s Creed Gold. The Audible audio drama follows an original storyline in which a card shark relives memories of its 17th-century ancestor, Omar Khaled.
Ahmed plays the ancestor who turns out to be a blind Assassin allied to the British Brotherhood. At one point, Omar was also apprenticed to scientist Isaac Newton.
Short films are canonical
the Assassin’s Creed The live-action adaptation turned out to be one of many failed movies based on video games. In contrast, there are three official Ubisoft shorts that are an integral part of the video game canon.
The first short film was Line which offered more information about Ezio’s father, serving as a prequel to Assassin’s Creed II. This was followed by Ancestry which served as an intermediate chapter between Assassin’s Creed II and the Brotherhood. In the same way, Ember acted as the epilogue of Ezio’s character arc.
Assassin’s Creed Chronicles has a manga
Among the many Assassin’s Creed comics and novels, a spin-off was released in manga format. Assassin’s Creed Blade of Shao Jun revolves around the adventures of the titular protagonist of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China.
The manga tells the story of Shao Jun seeking revenge for the deaths of his fellow Assassins at the hands of the Ming Empire. While much of the action takes place in China, the main character also makes a brief detour to Europe.
It is Ubisoft’s best-selling franchise
As of February 2021, the Assassin’s Creed franchise is the best-selling video game series for Ubisoft, replacing the likes of Far Cry, Prince of Persia, and Tom clancy. The player mentions that total sales of the games at that time stood at 155 million copies.
Odyssey, Origins, and Unity are the franchise’s biggest money makers, with each game selling 10 million copies worldwide. This was followed by Assassin’s Creed to 9 million.
